What is sustainability ?

Sustainability is the use of current resources to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development encompasses three main pillars which are.
1. Environmental
2. Social equity
3. Economic

Traditional annual reports lack accountability as they highly emphasise on the achievement of profits. Corporations can go to great lengths in order to maximise profits, even if negative externalities are produced along the way. This is why sustainable development is an important aspect because it makes corporations accountable for their actions.

The SDG

In 2012 the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development established a set of goals to work towards. This list contains 17 goals which aim to achieve a more sustainable future for everyone. I will be concentrating on goal 12 which is concerned on ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.

This goal is concerned with promoting resource and energy efficiency. Consumption of natural resources is increasing especially in Eastern Asia. As such, there is a great need to improve the supply chain management of our products. Consumers need to become more aware on how their products are sourced and manufactured from. This involves educating consumers on sustainable consumption by providing information through labels, sustainable company standards and practices on websites.

Indosole
One company which is improving its production process is Indosole.

This brand has re-purposed old tyres by converting them into footwear. Over 1.5 billion tyres are sent to the landfill each year. Tyres take up to a thousand years to decompose, additionally they cause air pollution when they are burnt leading to increased toxic oils and fumes which are harmful for human health.

The repurposing of rubber tyres into slides and and thongs is a great business initiative of recycling waste material. Indosole is a great company that has dedicated it’s business model in promoting better resource and energy efficiency through recycling. They are a certified B Corporation company, among over 1000 companies using their business power to save our environment.
